Zur Wartburg

History was written in 1989 with the reunification of Germany. This history has influenced all Germans. Places vanished, renewed or got capitalized. People started flocking towards the malls and surrendered themselves to them. However, some small islands of the lost past survived. Like encapsulated time. One of these islands was ‘Café/Restaurant Wartburg’ in Jena. The East German spirit was kept alive there until 2019. Upon closing down the memories of the place also faded. We bought these household effects in bulk with Theaterhaus Jena and made this into the decor for our play.

The bar has always been a melting pot where all sorts of situations constantly take a new meaning. In our theater piece you see - among others - a few of the bar’s regulars who try to keep their truths alive, while drenched in alcohol. Resentment arises in the context of a post-reunited Germany, and alternative stories are told. Welcome at our regulars table! Let’s all go to the Wartburg.
