“Venlo is a daring piece; a daring attempt to make topical, inspired and relevant theater. And Wunderbaum succeeds brilliantly.”
NRC Handelsblad
“Wunderbaum has managed to create a rock-solid and fierce piece in a short time. A story with a message.”
De Limburger
This new production is created in Venlo, famous for its carnival, asparagus, drug tourists and only recently also as Geert Wilders’ home town. The group of actors is working together with local politicians, music groups and actors.
This performance will go on tour to several cities in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium as a site-specific performance, but the series of performances in Venlo form the basis of the project. Here in this borderland between the Netherlands and Germany, Wunderbaum finds the atmosphere that we use as a theme in Venlo. Due to the cooperation with the various associations and the inhabitants of the town, a friction between reality and theatre is created
The inhabitants of a provincial town are going through a ‘liveability crisis’. The population has to contend with an identity problem: who are we and where are we heading? They find themselves in a divide between regionalism and cosmopolitanism.
In Venlo, the Wunderbaum actors play ‘minor leaders’: people who have to convert major ideas into every day practice. A police officer with two healthy daughters, an enthusiastic politician, a secondary school teacher and an ambitious entrepreneur.
The audience is witness to the unveiling of a work of art, a speech and a beer and sausage party. In a projected documentary film we get to know the inhabitants of the region.

“… Marleen Scholten as the alderman builds her role very cleverly, without any caricature. Her attempts to “rescue” the citizen from his mediocrity, though doomed to failure, are at least believable.”
De Volkskrant
“Beautiful, touching, heartbreaking it is, that beneath the uncompromising criticism there is always the Iove for the subject - the common man? The human being? The Dutchman? - remains palpable. The group judges harshly, but remains with integrity.”
