In the performance SQUARE, the audience is taken on a guided tour with headphones by a local guide. Together with musician Jens Bouttery, the guide offers a complete experience in which bleak reality, dreamt-up imagination, and (failed?) architecture merge into one another.

What makes an ideal square—and what doesn’t? Where do people park, and where do they sit? Is the square merely a passageway for determined shoppers, or does it also host genuine encounters? Who lives there? And can a well-designed square encourage us to step out of our own bubble?

Together with local residents, street musicians, and urban planners, Wunderbaum takes on the challenge. Our fragmented reality is condensed into one grand spectacle—an explosion of energy.

The performance has been presented in the cities of Curitiba (Brazil), Rotterdam, and The Hague, each time on a different square and with a new group of local volunteers. SQUARE is an original, musical, and theatrical performance developed in collaboration with 40 local residents and presented in a public square.
