Magna Plaza

Site-specific performance in a shopping centre about the great choices in life. Romantic tragedy about sacrifice, based on the film Dolls by Takeshi Kitano.

We see characters who experience love as dictated by market logic. Matsumoto is young, poor and in love with Sawako, but chooses the daughter of his boss. Nukui wants to get closer to the pop-heroine Haruna, who helps her to become a better version of herself. Hiro sits on a bench and mails to Ryoko, an escortgirl whom he had a fling with and is saving his virginity for.

“The audience is always somewhat of a voyeur, but in the location performance Magna Plaza by Wunderbaum this experience is complete. The audience sits, wearing headphones, on the top floor of the shopping centre and watches the five actors who blend into the acquisitive crowd in a concerted action of choreographies that sometimes simultaneously takes place on three floors and subsequently swarms out. The audience’s emotions are steered by the ‘soundtrack’ (by Remco de Jong) providing bombastic flickers and cotton candy sweet part-song by the actors.”
